A big wing hug from me and Snow!

A FIVE STAR REVIEW

A GATHERING OF DRAGONS

THERESA SNYDER

2020

This is the latest offering in the Farloft series of books about dragons and their kind. The tale is an adventure with far more than just adventuring to recommend it. It is an easy relaxing read, designed for all ages, though more especially for the younger reader or for that special bedtime story.

Despite this, adults of all ages who enjoy the thought of dragons as being friends, not blood thirsty killing machines as history has a tendency to described them, will also love these tales and especially this latest one.

Farloft sets out to save his family, his friends, his country, and his home. To do so he must first recruit a range of other dragons and helpers to his cause, some of whom are reluctant at best to join said cause. The machinations, twists and turns, the lightness amidst what should be darkness and the hope that flows from the tale are enlightening and make the reader feel carried along in the world of dragons.

As a final thought, I would have to say that this book has the ability to grab a tight, but friendly hold, on the reader from page one and not let go to the very last word has been read. I would give it five stars and more if they were available, so why not give it a try? You won’t regret it.

- David Stevens
Author of The Lifestone Chronicles

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3049511410777965802.post-65742774797607854402020-11-27T12:21:00.005-08:002020-11-27T12:27:38.236-08:00A Teaser from A GATHERING OF DRAGONS
Here is an excerpt from my New Book...
<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif; font-size: 22pt; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">The
fog was dense and cold. With Adrian on his back, Farloft spread his wings and
sailed quietly in for a landing outside the township of Wallington. The big
dragon sank into the muddy field up to his ankles.

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">“Let
me get you to drier ground before you slid off,” Farloft whispered to Adrian.

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">He
padded quietly out of the field, listening intently and watching for movement. The
fog was so thick he didn’t realize he had reached the road until his paws
stopped making a sucking sound each time he took a step forward.

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">Adrian
pulled his hood down and rose up in the stirrups of the saddle. “I can’t see
anything to get my bearing. Do you know where we are?”

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">Farloft
pointed with a wing. “Wallington is about a mile that way.” The big dragon
stepped off the road and headed up toward the shelter of the woods. “I will
stay here while you go in. You have the Dragoncall, if you need me.”

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">This
was the arrangement they had made over and over during the past month as they
travelled. They flew by night, then found a place for Farloft to wait while
Adrian went into the community with his stories and songs, but also to listen.
Even though the bard had previously brought news from Jaldraak, the old dragon
insisted on being thorough. He wanted to start in Jaldraak and work their way
south to Wallington and the source.

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">“Oh,
that’s not good,” Adrian said, as they walked by a tree with a posted notice on
it.

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">Farloft
stopped and bent his head to read. It was a wanted poster. He reached out and
tore the paper from the tree leaving deep claw marks in its place.

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">“One
hundred gold coins and ten parcels of land as bounty for me?” The dragon boomed.
“I am worth far more than that!” The old beast was insulted by the poster
rather than frightened.

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">“Well,
perhaps it is all the Crown on this side of Westridge has to offer,” Adrian
tried to soothe him. The dragon was growing so warm beneath him he could feel
it through the saddle.

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">“Nonetheless,”
Farloft snorted in indignation. “King Tallis offered ten times that for my head
when he ruled Baldar!”

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">“And
when was that?” Adrian asked.

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">“Hummm,”
the dragon mused, “perhaps a century ago, or maybe two.”

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">“Well,”
Adrian said with a lift of his brow, “times are hard these days.”

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">Farloft
crushed the poster in his paw and tossed it to one side. “Not an excuse for
devaluing a dragon’s worth,” he grumbled.

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">The
dragon huffed and extended a wing so the bard could dismount.

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">“If
I’m not back in three days, you come find me.”

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">Farloft
nudged the bard in the back with his nose. “If you are not back in three days,
I may burn the castle down after that insult,” he said nodding toward the
crumpled paper.

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">“Please
don’t,” Adrian advised. “We were sent here to find out about a possible war,
not start one.”

<span style="font-family: "Garamond",serif;">

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3049511410777965802.post-55035218093784132412020-10-17T12:04:00.003-07:002020-10-17T12:05:08.469-07:00A Gathering of Dragons
My new Farloft Chronicle is set for pre-sale October 31, 2020. Judges:

Theresa has enlisted four independent judges for the contest. Let me introduce them to you.

J. S. Burke - J. S. Burke on Goodreads
J. S. Burke has worked as an author, artist, and marine biologist, studying creatures of the dark abyss and diving on coral reefs. Her stories blend imagination with real science and author experiences. The Dragon Dreamer series grew from years at sea, a fascination with clever, alien octopuses, and a love of dragons. Burke lives with her family, rescue pets, and dragons!

Lexi Miles - Lexi Miles on Amazon/ leximilesauthor.com
Lexi embraces who she is and is a huge fan of positivity; accordingly, she loves to giggle and make others smiles as often as she can. Lexi fell in LOVE with writing--head over heels in love--from the time that she could first hold a pen and she just never stopped falling. She loves writing romance; she believes there is something extraordinary about the magic of love shared by a couple.

Dianne Astle - Dianne Astle on Amazon

At one point in Dianne's life she believed that people grew up and when they did they stopped reading Fantasy. She never planned to be an author, but a chance week at a retreat centre dropped the idea for a story into her head. Dianne says, "It seems I have always been drawn to dragons. There is the dragon tea pot, with a spout that doesn't really work. There is the dragon necklace. And the only stuffed toy I've ever bought for myself was a dragon. Someone once asked me what kind of animal. There was a look of shock on her face when I said dragon. So it only makes sense that when I write a book there would be dragons in it."

Now on with the story...

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Trollik
and Ragnadolf’s Hoard
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 150%;">By
Theresa Snyder

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Farloft
watched as the large black dragon glided around the edge of the high beach
cliff. This was the third day of following the dragon. His dark body, with dark
blue fur accents on his tail, made him easy to spot as he sailed along the
shoreline. Farloft was fascinated by the dragon’s actions. At first, he
appeared to be searching for food in the many caves hollowed out of the chalk
that rose up from the beach almost four-hundred feet. However, with a bit more
observation Farloft saw the dragon fishing for his meals in the ocean and along
the plain which topped the cliff, yet he still searched the cliff caves
tirelessly. Curiosity had gripped Farloft. He wanted to know what the dragon
was doing.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> Farloft’s father gave him advice
before he set out on his youngling dragon quest. He told his son to be cautious
in approaching others, not just humans, but dragons as well. Not all were
friendly, many had territories that they defended to the death. He needed to
observe, not rush in.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Three days were about as much time
observing as Farloft’s curiosity could handle. He decided when he rounded the
bend, to find the black dragon digging in another cave, he was going to
introduce himself. Farloft gave his wings a powerful down-thrust and glided
around the cliff edge to meet this new dragon.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">The big black dragon met him head
on with a scorching breath when he rounded the corner.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Farloft did a quick back-thrust and
zoomed to the plain at the top of the cliff with the black close on his tail. It
was a mistake to have surprised the other dragon, but it was too late now. He
had to either fight or try and make amends. Fighting would be a mistake. The
black was almost twice as big as him. The size of Farloft’s father. Farloft
quickly landed, spread his wings and bowed politely to the big black.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“I am so sorry I surprised you,” he
apologized when the black landed directly in front of him.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Who are you and why are you
following me?” the other dragon demanded.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Farloft noticed there was a tremor in the other dragon’s voice and the tone was much higher pitched then he
expected. This dragon was younger than his size led Farloft to believe. And was
that tremor a touch of fear? Were the aggressive flames brought on by fear and
inexperience even though he was the bigger dragon?

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“My name is Farloft.” He bowed
again. “I just saw you searching the cliff caves and thought I might be of
assistance, if I knew what you were looking for,” he offered.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">The black dragon studied Farloft
with his bright green eyes. “I am Trollik,” he said, but he did not give
Farloft any further explanation.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Farloft relaxed and sat back on his
haunches. “I’m new to this continent. My clan lives east of here.” He grinned
at Trollik. “I’m on my youngling dragon quest. Is that what you’re doing?”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“I do not know what you mean by
dragon quest, but I am a youngling among my clan,” Trollik confirmed.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">So, he was a young dragon even
though he was huge.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Your clan members must get very
large.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Trollik grinned back. He was
beginning to relax. “We do indeed. I will grow three times as big before my 50,000
spring.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“You will live to be 50,000 years
old?” Farloft said in disbelief. The oldest member of his clan was hardly 2,000.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Oh yes, unless something awful
happens to me…” Trollik flicked his tail showing off his blue accented fur. “And
I will grow long bright blue fur down my back to the tip of my tail and on the
backs of my legs. My father’s fur almost glows in the dark. Not like this dark
blue.” He sat down and took a close look at Farloft. “What is this ‘dragon
quest’ you speak of?”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Well, when our clan members reach
65 springs they are encouraged to set out on a quest of discovery. We
investigate the other eight continents of our world, meet dragons and other
living beings, and perhaps find a place of our own to live and raise a family.
I have been on my quest for four years now and have seen six of the nine
continents. You are the first I have met on this land.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“That sounds marvelous,” Trollik
said with a sparkle in his green eyes. “I will travel more when I am older, I
hope. For now, I suppose Ragnadolf’s hoard is my quest.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Ragnadolf’s hoard?”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“It is an old story among my clan.
Ragnadolf, a mighty dragon, lived in this land many long years ago. He was a
very enterprising dragon. He led hundreds of caravans across these plains.”
Trollik waved a wing to indicate the land they were sitting on. “For his
protection, and safe passage, it is said that the caravan leaders gave Ragnadolf
many fine treasures. When he died his hoard was believed to be the largest in
the land. However, he died without an heir and without anyone knowing where his
lair was or if he even kept his hoard there.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Farloft snorted in surprise. “So,
his hoard is out there somewhere?” He waved a wing out over the plain.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“It is indeed… and many have
searched for it in the past without finding it. They found his lair, but the
treasure was not there. Either someone beat the finders to it, or he stashed it
somewhere he thought was safer.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“And you think it may be along this
chalk sea-wall?”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“No one has ever searched it as
extensively as I am doing. The wall is too long, and everyone eventually gives
up.” Trollik rose and stood to emphasize his point. “However, I do not intend
to give up until I have searched it from the east tip to the west.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Would you like some help?” Farloft
asked. “I am on my quest, so I wouldn’t claim any for myself. I’d have no way
to carry it.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Trollik thought for only a moment
before he lowered his head and extended his paw. “I would be happy for the
company. It is a lonely pastime.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Farloft took his paw. “Count me
in.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">~*~

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Trollik silently pointed down
through the trees. Farloft couldn’t see anything through the canopy below, but
he trusted the young black. Even though Farloft had superior eyesight, his new
friend seemed to be able to see through the branches.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">They both dived, and sure enough,
once they broke through the top branches Farloft spotted the herd. They both
picked out a large beast for their daily meal.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“How do you do that?” Farloft asked
later as he chawed on a leg bone. “I couldn’t see the herd until we got below
the canopy.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Trollik tapped the side of his head
with one long claw. “I shift my vision so I can see the heat of their bodies.
It doesn’t help with fishing, but anything warm blooded gives off heat.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Handy,” Farloft said with a grin.
“I was thinking…”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Trollik looked up from his meal
with anticipation.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Have the forests been explored
fully for Ragnadolf’s treasure? My clan lives in caves in forests.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“His lair was in this forest, but
it has been fully searched over the centuries.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Maybe he buried it? I met a dragon
on another continent that buried his treasure in the sand.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Trollik pawed at the ground below
their feet. Under the forest debris was a hardpacked layer of clay. “Can you
imagine digging in this miserable excuse for soil?”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Maybe Ragnadolf had longer claws,
like razors.” Farloft grinned.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Or shovels…” Trollik started to
chuckle.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Can you imagine?” Farloft extended
his claws and flexed his paw. He giggled and went back to his meal.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">~*~

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">The summer continued to unfold at a
leisurely pace. Farloft and his new friend spent their days searching the
cliffs with breaks to hunt.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">During the evening they would lay
on the beach, or the plain, and tell each other about their families and
friends. Farloft regaled Trollik with stories of his travels thus far, and
Trollik recounted ancient tales of Ragnadolf and other legendary dragons of his
clan.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">The two young dragons warmed to
each other and the bounds of friendship began to set in solid stone.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">~*~

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Trollik tossed another fish to
Farloft. “You certainly eat a lot for such a small dragon.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">He nabbed the fish from mid-air.
“Helps me grow big and strong.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">The black and he had been searching
the cliff caves for over three months. They had not been rewarded for their
troubles unless you counted a run-in with a nasty hibernating griffin and
several encounters with snakes of varying sizes. It seemed the snakes feasted
on birds that made the ill found choice of using the caves for nesting areas.
Today or tomorrow they would be at the end of their quest. The cliff face
petered off into the sea at this point.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“I’ve been thinking,” Farloft said
in between bites.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Oh no…” Trollik shook his long,
wedged head back and forth. “Not again…”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">This had become a game for the two
youngling dragons. Farloft always seemed to be thinking of a new, ridiculous,
idea on the way they should alter their search, which usually ended up in
Trollik pointing out the idiocy of the idea and them both breaking down into
laughter.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“No, wait…” Farloft protested in
all seriousness. “I really do think I have an idea this time.” He threw the
skeleton of the large fish to one side. “Do any of your tales of Ragnadolf say
how big he was?”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Trollik scratched his head in
thought. “Not that I remember. Why?”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Well, we haven’t searched all the
caves,” Farloft pointed out. “Ones that were too small for you to get into, we
skipped. I assumed you were basing you search on a cave that at least you could
fit into because the members of your clan are the size they are. What if
Ragnadolf was a dragon from somewhere else who just took up residence here. He
could have been a smaller dragon. Even a smaller dragon would scare humans and
could defend a caravan.” Farloft looked hopefully at Trollik. “I have met other
dragons on my quest, like you, who possess magic. He could have used magic to
defend the humans from marauders.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Trollik laid his head down on his
paws. “You might have something there, my friend. Ragnadolf lived so long ago
that his description is lost to us. I, like the others who have searched,
assumed he was from our clan, but you may be right.” Trollik raised up. “Let us
finish the thorough search of the larger caves to the end of the cliffs. If we
don’t find anything then I am willing, if you are, to start from this end and
keep you company while you investigate the smaller caves.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Ready, willing and able,” Farloft
said with a grin. “I am growing used to you catching my supper from the sea
each night.” Farloft rolled over on his back. “I am getting fat and spoiled.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Trollik laughed and tossed another
fish to Farloft. “Eat up. You will need your strength. I feel our luck is about
to change.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">~*~

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Two days later Farloft and Trollik
stood before the east end of the cliff wall as it petered into the sea. There
was a section at the end taller than Farloft and wider than his wingspan filled
with dragon runes.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“What is this?” he asked Trollik.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“These are the names of all who
have searched for the treasure over the centuries.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">There were hundreds of names. Trollik
placed his paw on a bare space on the wall. He seemed to go into a trance and
the blue hair on his tail stood up on end. When his eyes came back into focus
and the fur of his tail smoothed, he removed his paw. On the wall was a new
dragonic rune. His name.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">They both looked down the long
undulating shoreline of the chalk cliffs.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Trollick’s tail twitched in
anticipation. “Tomorrow we start searching the smaller caves we overlooked.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“Tomorrow,” Farloft echoed.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">~*~

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Their luck did change. Not that day
or the next. Not even that week or month, but almost six weeks later Farloft
spotted a stream of water running out of one of the caves, like a
mini-waterfall, down the cliff face. He entered the smallish cave opening while
Trollik lay sunning himself on the plain above. Once in, there was a tunnel
that curved to the left and then opened into a huge domed chamber.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">There it was…

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">It was breathtaking, especially to
a dragon, the true species to appreciate things that shined, glittered and
gleamed. Standing at the mouth of the tunnel, in the stream, Farloft was
overcome with the brilliance of Ragnadolf’s hoard.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">The dragon had dug a hole in the stone
roof of the cave, which allowed light to spill in from the plain above. It was
also where the water for the stream came tumbling in a beautiful waterfall
behind the huge mound of treasure. Ragnadolf also dug a moat around his pile of
treasure and then a trough down the tunnel to the mouth of the cave, which allowed
the water from the stream to flow fresh and clear through his treasure palace.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">And it was a palace, a shrine to
his treasure trove. The bed of the moat and stream from the entrance to the
tunnel were lined with multi-faceted jewels. The treasure trickled off the
mound and down into the moat. The back wall of the cave was covered with ornate
mirrors, shields, and trays that sparkled in the light from the overhead hole
and lit his bounty. The items on the wall were so highly polished that they
must have been enchanted to have lasted this long in the sea air and not
corroded.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">The light was such that it bounced
around the spray off the waterfall making rainbows behind the hoard. The mound
looked twice its size. The whole spectacle made Farloft’s mouth water and his
breath catch in his throat.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">He walked to the edge of the stream
around the mound. It rose well over his head. Ragnadolf might have been small,
but his collection was the largest Farloft had even seen. There was every
manner of treasure, plates, trays, human eating utensils, goblets set with jewels,
crowns, tiaras and armor, coins, staffs, scepters, and all of it was topped
with a massive pile of ornate, brightly colored silks that cascaded down the
sides of the mound like snow in the crevasses of a huge mountain. Ragnadolf had
loved his comfort and his hoard.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Farloft leaped to the top of the
mound and settled down in the deep luxury of the silk pile. He chuckled as he
rolled and rooted deeper into the soft mound. He could hear the small
avalanches of coins and treasure shift and tinkle down the mound to spill into
the stream. He rolled over and let out a laugh followed by a roar of pleasure.
He was in dragon heaven.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“What’s going on down there?”
Trollik called down the hole in the roof of the cave.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Farloft looked up and could see his
friend’s face through the hole. “I found it!” he crowed in delight. “I found
Ragnadolf’s treasure!”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Trollik started to dig…

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Farloft sprung up. “No! You’ll cave
the roof in! Come around to the cliff face and we’ll widen the cave entrance so
you can get in.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Trollik roared in excitement as he
leaped into the air to join Farloft at the entrance.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">~*~

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">They worked hard to preserve the
streambed as they widened the opening and tunnel to the treasure dome. It took
them several hours, but Trollik thought it well worth the effort once they were
finished.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">He was elated when he saw the hoard
for the first time. They both circled it amazed and mesmerized.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“He was really a showman,” Farloft
noted. “Look at the way the light bounces off the mirrors and makes the
rainbows.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“I wonder how long it took him to
accumulate this much treasure?”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">“A lifetime…”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">~*~

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> Trollik and Farloft lay sleeping on
the soft silks of Ragnadolf’s hoard. Both dragons were lost in their own
dreams.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> Trollik had returned triumphantly to
his clan bearing gifts for his parents, a jeweled crown for his father and a
dazzling tiara inlayed with gems for his mother. In his dream everyone gathered
around. There were many questions about where he had found Ragnadolf’s hoard.
He tried over and over to evade their inquiries, but eventually retreated to
his family’s cave to escape their constant badgering. But in his dream, he
couldn’t even escape them in the confines of his parent’s lair. The leering
faces of his fellow clan members were in the smoke of the fire, their images
oozed from the walls and when he flew from the cave in a panic, they pestered
him from the clouds. “Where is Ragnadolf’s treasure?” they cried over and
over.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> Farloft’s dreams were equally
unsettling. In his dream world, even though he told Trollik he would not take
any of the treasure, he fashioned a bag out of the silks and piled it full of
items from the hoard. When he launched himself from the mouth of the cave, the
bag was so heavy that its weight threatened to bring him crashing to the beach
below. He slipped his head out just in time and the hoard tumbled down the
cliff to scatter on the beach.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> As soon as it hit the sand, all the
dragons Farloft had met on his dragon quest thus far came sailing out of the
clouds. They descended upon the treasure and began to quarrel and eventually to
viciously fight each other for each item. These were dragons he had made
friends with. He had lived with them, ate with them, hunted and played with
them. He couldn’t believe the viciousness of their attack on each other.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> He swooped down and flew into their
midst trying to stop them. When he landed, they turned on him snapping, biting
and clawing at him. He woke with a start.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> Trollik was restless and growling in
his sleep, but he was still asleep, so Farloft rose as quietly as possible and
went to the mouth of the cave to get some fresh air to clear his head.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> It was not long before Trollik
joined him as the sun was just rising and spilling its raze across the waters
before them.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> Trollik sat down beside Farloft.
“I’ve been thinking.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “That’s my line,” Farloft said with
a grin, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. He was still a bit fogged from his
nightmare.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “I know…” Trollik shook his head. “I
don’t think I want to tell anyone we found the treasure. I don’t think I am
ready to deal with defending it.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “Really?” Farloft tilted his head on
one side. “I was thinking the same thing.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “I don’t think we’re old enough or
experienced enough to defend it,” Trollik went on. “And I really would like to
share it with you one day. You did figure out where to look and you technically
did find it. One day you will have a lair of your own…”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “And you will have one too,” Farloft
added. He was pleased they were of like minds.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “Yes, and then we can divide it up…”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “And we’ll be older… and bigger… and
can guard it better…”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “Exactly!”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “Exactly!”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">~*~

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> The two young dragons worked for two
days walling the treasure back up, insuring that the stream was still able to
flow from the hole in the dome through a trough they preserved to a smaller
opening on the cliff face. They used the chalk they excavated for Trollik’s entry
into the cave. It appeared the same from the outside. Now even a small dragon
could not get inside. One would have to dig to find the hoard.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> Farloft and Trollik sat on the beach
feeling as if a load had been lifted from their shoulders. During the sealing
of the cave they both had confessed to the other their dreams. They knew they
were doing the right thing. As much as a dragon loved ‘dazzlers’ it was
important to know one’s limits and what one was capable of protecting. It was
not their day to claim such a huge wealth.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “Will you head home now?” Farloft
asked.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “I believe so. I have been away for
too long. My parents will start to worry soon.” Trollik scribbled a rune in the
sand as he spoke. “How about you? Will you continue on?”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “I will indeed.” Farloft ruffled his
wings to rid them of the sand. “I have a whole continent to investigate. So far
I have only seen the coast.” He chuckled.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “Ahhhh, but you have done a thorough
survey of it,” Trollik said under a chuckle of his own. “Let me fish for you
one last time. I wouldn’t want to send you off on an empty stomach.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> “That would be truly appreciated,”
Farloft said as he leaned in and patted Trollik’s shoulder with a paw. “I love
the fish in your sea. Perhaps when I return years from now, I will bring you
one of our elk. They are the finest in this world and the next.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> Trollik grinned. “I would like
that.” He rose. “Until then, we feast on fish and dream of Ragnadolf’s
treasure.”

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> Farloft came to his feet and wing
bumped the big black dragon. “Until then…”

I am pleased to present a piece of fanfiction by Elizabeth Babicz. It was inspired by my latest story "A Gathering of Dragons" which Theresa is posting on her Serial Story Blog.

Elizabeth not only wrote the story, she did the art as well. Here is her piece:

The Tale of Veryn

The night was filled with the deafening sound of crickets chirping and the fire cracking between the dark red dragoness and Farloft. She didn’t seem to be bothered by the silence, but it was enough to drive the talkative old dragon insane. Finally, unable to take it anymore, the words were pried from the old dragon’s snout.

“Now that I’ve helped you, I think it’s fair that you explain exactly who you are.”

The young dragoness shot a daring gaze at her elder before piping up, “It’s none of your concern who I am old scales...” she paused for a moment.

Farloft opened his mouth, preparing a rebuttal, but the dragoness continued.

“...but I fear that if I do not speak to anybody, my past may consume me and turn me into something much worse…” Her gaze dropped to the grass as she coyly drug her claw through the dirt.

Farloft softly sighed, shifted in his spot getting into a comfortable position, and stretched out his paw towards her, gesturing her to speak. “I am here young one, please, explain your story.” He lowered his paw and softly smiled.

The young dragoness mirrored Farloft’s smile and let out a deep sigh before speaking. “It began when I was only a hatchling…”

My father was a fierce Wyvern from the far North and my mother was a Western dragon. He never explained to me how he had met my mother, but from how he would say her name, or tell stories of her, I knew that he cared for her greatly.

I would like to believe that my father was aggressive because my mother passed and was not around to comfort him, rather than think that it was just his natural demeanor. For 60 years, my father had no problems with bringing me sheep, cattle or boars that I needed to eat. I knew that he cared for me deeply. He would tell me “Now Veryn, you must eat plenty of food so that you can grow big and strong like m-”

Farloft interrupted with a chuckle that had escaped even though he fought to suppress it. “I’m terribly sorry to laugh! I mean no harm, but your name is VERYN? Like, WYVERN?”
“Yes, my father was not the most creative dragon around, but it’s my name.” Though smiling, Veryn growled in agitation.

Farloft cleared his throat, uncomfortably, and slightly lowered his head. “C-Continue…”

Veryn relaxed and closed her eyes, continuing on:

Now at the time I didn’t understand, but I quickly learned that after a few generations of stealing the neighboring kingdom’s livestock, they would grow more and more angry with us.

One cloudy day in particular, I walked to the entrance of our cave. My father was walking up the hill, a large cow in tow, but not far behind him was a group of humans. Alerting my father, he quickly dropped the cow and frantically pushed me to the back of the cave.

“You must hide! Quickly! Who knows what those humans will do to you, please!” he shouted at me.

I curled up tightly behind a pile of rocks and squeezed my eyes shut. I heard the sound of my father roaring and shouting for the men to leave. His pleas were in vain, of course; the men’s judgement was clouded by hate and anger towards my father and they were merciless…

There was roaring and shouting... and then, silence. I dared not move in case the group was still wandering around the cave…

After laying for what felt like an eternity, I finally poked my head over the rocks and observed the cave. There was blood everywhere, even on the dimly lit cave floor I could tell puddles of blood from water.

I called for my father, but I had never heard a reply. I dragged a few men out from the cave to leave them at the entrance. Afterwards I curled up against the same pile of rocks that I had hidden behind, but faced the cave entrance so that I could keep an eye out for my father.

Hearing footsteps I was never greeted by my father, but rather, a smaller group of men had returned with a wagon and chains. They must have snuck up on me while I had been sleeping and hit me upside the head, leaving me unconscious. When I finally awoke, I heard the clatter of chains around me. I tried lifting my head, only to have it fall to the cold floor. They had restrained my horns with gold cuffs and chains attaching to the ground. I could lift my head, but stretching my neck was not possible. They had also restrained my front limbs as well as my tail. Given that my tail has spikes, it was a smart move on their part. What wasn’t wise was that they had forgotten my back feet. For the life of me I can’t think of why they wouldn’t. Do they think I kick in my sleep?
Veryn wrinkled her nose and scoffed at the thought.

Little did they know that it would be their own demise. When it came feeding time I pretended to be asleep. The men laughed at how they thought they had ‘caught a mighty beast’ and how they were going to ‘tame’ me. I tried to remain calm, but then one of the brutes chucked a fish at my face and my eyes snapped open. I let out a deep growl. It seemed to have caught them off guard, but they entered a fighting stance. They wanted a fight? They got one.

I stood as tall as my chains would allow me and flapped my wings, blowing gusts of wind at the two men. I had never flown in my life before, so my wings weren’t strong enough and it barely sent them stumbling. No good. They were moving in on me, incredibly angry, and pulled swords out from their hilts. As a last resort I opened my mouth, unveiling my sharp teeth, in an attempt to frighten them. At first, they were intimidated, but because I could back up my display with fire, they called my bluff and continued their pursuit.

I couldn’t think of anything else now. I was out of ideas. Finally, I unleashed the mightiest roar that I could from the very bottom of my being. Their terrified looks only fueled my energy to escape. I leaned onto my wings, lifted my front limbs as high as the chains would let me, and reached my free back feet forward, grabbing the men and holding them between my talons. It felt so good to squeeze them, like it somehow made up for what the group had done to my father and me. Before I continued into something I couldn’t turn back from, I chucked the men across the room and focused on my own escape. I yanked. I tugged. I pulled. Eventually, I broke free of their weak human bindings, only the cuffs remaining, and I made my escape.

Still unable to fly, I ran. I ran as far as my legs could carry me. And when I couldn’t run anymore, I plopped to the ground and gave up. I was exhausted, hungry, thirsty and lonely. That is, until you found me…

Farloft smiled proudly and tried to assure the young dragoness. “Not all humans are like this Veryn, I’m so sorry that this happened to you. From now on, I am here to guide you.”

“Thank you Farloft, I look forward to helping you gather as many dragons for your cause, as well as being there to fight myself.”

However, we dragons are a bit hard-headed. Goldy did say that dealing with 24 dragons was quite a challenge.

Darris, a friend of mine, and I recently helped a little lost girl, Nakita.

I thought you would like to hear her story.

To the Rescue!

Nakita sat on one side of the fence and the puppy romped around on the other side. The puppy was so cute it made the child’s heart sing. It was fluffy and white, with a patch of brown over one eye and ear. Nakita wanted to pick him up and cuddle him so very much. She had wanted a puppy of her very own, ever since the day she saw one in the window of the pet store in town. This puppy looked so much like that one.

She stuck her hand through the webbing of the chain-link fence and the little bundle of fur ran over to her and rubbed its head on her hand; just like it was her very own. This brought such a big smile to Nakita's face. When she giggled it licked her and whined with excitement. Its tale wagged so fast, it made its rump wiggle excitedly. Nakita could see it wanted to be with her as much as she wanted to be with it.

She tickled its soft ears. “Where did you come from?”

She looked up and down the long street she lived on while scratching under the puppy's chin. She looked at the little bundle of fur, her brow furrowing thoughtfully. Mommy and Daddy always told her not to go out of the yard, but they also told her the dangers of being hit by a car. The puppy was out on the sidewalk, very close to the street. Mommy always kept her cat inside to keep it safe. Nakita did not think she would want the puppy to get hurt. She decided she would just open the gate to their yard a little and coax the puppy in where it was safe.

She ran down to the other end of the fence and the puppy loped after her, its ears flapping in the wind. It stopped once to smell something, but when she bent down on the other side of the fence and slapped her hands on her legs, to get its attention, and called, “Come on!” It stopped sniffing and ran after her.

When she got to the gate, she lifted the latch and swung it open. The puppy ran in and did loops around her in the yard. When she clapped at him, he came to her and jumped up on her trying to lick her face. She laughed and hugged him. He was such a sweet little doggie.

The pup struggled out of her grip and yapping at the top of its voice it ran back out the gate and headed up the street. Nakita did not remember her mother’s warning about staying in the yard. Instead, she ran after it, passing through the open gate without the slightest bit of hesitation, running down the street after the energetic ball of fluff.

As they played together, the puppy led Nakita further and further away from home. Nakita kept trying to coax the puppy away from the street and before long, they found themselves wandering up on lawns and taking shortcuts through hedges. Eventually, they came to a park and the puppy ran in circles as Nakita played on the swings. She loved to swing. She went from the swings to the slide. She even managed to catch the puppy long enough to pick it up and cuddle the ball of fluff for a time. She loved the warm feel of its soft fur and thought she might take it on the slide, but he wiggled free again and ran under the roundabout to hide. Nakita went on the slide several times by herself. It was so much fun.

When she finally got tired and went to look for the puppy, it was not there. It was gone. She spent a long, long time searching for the puppy, but could not find it. It was gone. It had left her.

She sat down on the roundabout and cried. She cried because the puppy left her, but most of all, she cried because she realized for the first time, that she did not know where home was. She followed the puppy and did not pay attention where he was leading her. She was lost!

*****

Farloft and Darris, two very good dragon friends, were playing hide and seek in the clouds above Australia when Farloft heard Nakita crying. It was Farloft's turn to find Darris and while darting in and out of the clouds something caught his ear, so he stopped and hovered in the air, listening.

“Listen…” he called to Darris. “I hear someone crying.”

Darris, who had been hiding in a cloud nearby, poked his head out and turned an ear to listen. “I hear it too,” he exclaimed. "It sounds like a human child."

“We should go see if we can help,” Farloft suggested. He tipped his wing and sailed down in big lazy loops trying to locate the sound of the crying as he descended.

Darris rumbled in agreement and followed after Farloft, spiraling down from the opposite direction so that their paths crisscrossed as they descended.

Both dragons had exceptional eyesight and they scanned the city below doing their best to spot the child who was in distress.

“There!” Darris said and pointed a paw at a playground below them. “On the swing.”

Darris was much younger and had better eyesight than Farloft. He spotted a little girl with blond hair sitting and crying in the park.

The two dragons landed right in front of Nakita. She was not scared, because her Uncle had read books about dragons to her. But, she was very surprised.

“Hi,” Farloft said softly. “I am Farloft and this is my friend, Darris.” He pointed to Darris with a large green paw. “We heard you crying. Is there anything we can do to help?”

Farloft was very big, but he seemed very sweet and helpful. Darris had a nice grin on his face, which made Nakita decide to trust them a little. At least enough to tell them her story.

“I was playing with a puppy,” she said, as she dried her tears on her sleeve. “He led me here, but then he left and,” she sniffed, “I don’t know where ‘here’ is.”

She started to puddle up again because she knew her mother and father would be worried about her and it was never her intention to get herself lost!

“Don’t cry,” Farloft said soothingly and wrapped a wing around her. “Do you know where you live?”

“Do you have the address memorized?” Darris asked. “We dragons always memorize important numbers. We always know how many treasures we have in our hoards.”

Nakita’s mother did have her memorize her address and she rattled it off to the dragons. They both gave her a toothy grin.

“We know where that is,” Farloft said. “Come on, we’ll take you home.”

Nakita hopped out of the swing and Farloft scooped her up in his large green paws and placed her on Darris’ back.

“Hold on tight,” he told her, “and don’t worry. We won’t let you fall.”

Darris was very careful not to launch into the air quite as fast as he normally did. Farloft made sure he was right behind him and ready to catch Nakita if she fell. Nakita held tight to Darris’ mane of blue fur. It was long and wavy, and softer to the touch than it looked; but not as soft as the puppy's fur.

Nakita was fearless. She laughed and squealed in glee. Flying with the dragons was even more fun than playing with the puppy.

Once the dragons saw Nakita was not scared, they decided it would not hurt to take a few extra minutes to give the little girl a ride she would remember. They spread their wings and made a big loop over the Sydney Opera House.

“Faster! Higher!” Nakita begged the dragons.

“You like to slide?” Darris asked.

“Oh yes…” Nakita cried with delight.

“Okay…” Darris looked over his shoulder at her with one big sapphire eye. “Let go and I’ll slide you down my wing to Farloft and he will catch you.”

“That will be the highest slide you will ever be on,” Farloft said as he tucked his wing under Darris’.

They glided along with their wings locked in place. Darris tipped and Farloft tipped with him. Nakita slid laughing all the way down Darris’ long dark wing to Farloft’s deep green one, and on to his back. She grabbed his neck spikes and pulled herself up on his shoulders.

“That was the best slide ever!” she hollered against the wind.

“The BEST!” both the dragons agreed.

It was only a moment longer and a short few flaps of their mighty wings and they arrived in the street before Nakita’s home. Darris sat down on his haunches and lifted the child from Farloft’s back. Farloft scooted her through the gate and into the yard. He threw the latch and the two dragons sat on the other side of the fence just like the puppy had earlier in the day.

Nakita reached her arms through the fence and hugged each one of them.

“Thank you for bringing me home,” she said softly.

“You are welcome,” Darris said.

“Remember not to leave the yard next time, no matter how cute the puppy is,” Farloft told her. “You don’t want to get lost again. We might not be around to bring you home.”

“I’ll remember,” Nakita said, smiling. Then her smile faded into a sad little pout. She looked down. Darris rumbled in confusion and shot a questioning glance at Farloft before he arched his head over the fence and gently nudged Nakita's head with his snout.

"What is wrong, my dear?"

Nakita looked up into his caring blue eyes, tears welling in her own.

"The puppy is still out there, probably all alone. I miss him already. I wish he was here."

Nakita looked down again as Darris drew his head back to rest on his haunches, scratching his chin.

"Ohhhhh. I see. You really like that puppy, eh?"

Nakita nodded, but did not look up. Darris looked at her thoughtfully while continuing to scratch his chin. After a few moments, he smiled, rose to all fours and nudged Farflot's shoulder with his snout. Farloft smiled and nodded in silent dragon understanding. His golden eyes whirled with delight.

"Farloft will keep you company,” Darris said. “Wait here, I'll be right back."

Darris grinned a big toothy smile at Farloft. The dragons had a plan. Then the big blue dragon leapt into the air and flew off.

When Darris was out of sight, Farloft looked back at Nakita, who was studying him. He shrugged playfully and entertained her by blowing smoke rings in the air. It put a smile on her face. Some were heart shaped, and when Nakita stuck her hand through the fence, Farloft blew her an armful of smoke ring bracelets. The dragon had just blown the child a smoky crown when a flush of a sudden breeze came, followed by the sound of flapping wings. Darris landed on the ground gently, a small ball of fluff hugged close to his blue-scaled chest.

"Puppy!" Nakita smiled, trying to reach over the top of the fence for the bundle of fur.

Darris rumbled and smiled a toothy grin back as he reached over the fence with his paw and placed the wiggling ball of fur into the eagerly waiting hands of the little human. Farloft smiled his approval and Nakita instantly hugged the puppy to her chest, cooing to it. Then she looked up between Farloft and Darris, the biggest smile ever on her face.

"Thank you ever so much!" The puppy licked her chin and she went back to hugging and petting it.

Darris and Farloft looked at each other, each wearing the most satisfied grin a little girl might ever see on a dragon. They both extended their wings and bowed to her, before they turned and sprang into the air. They looked back and waved a wing at Nakita safely tucked behind the fence in her yard. Natika threw kisses at them as they flew off for their home in the mountains.

This is another one of the folks who won in the raffle I posted for a story with me.

Blue is a dragon friend of mine and wanted a story which showed tolerance for him. He has always felt like an outcast among humans. He wanted me to break the ice for him by introducing him to some children. I knew just the one he needed to meet.

(And a additional treat this time is Blue Hasia commissioned an art piece for the story. See below.)

Dancing in the Rain

“Come on,” Farloft called, as he dropped over the edge of the cliff. His wings popped open and he glided in a wide circle waiting for his friend.

Blue still sat on the ledge with a look of trepidation on his face. He wasn’t really sure about going with the older dragon. He huffed his blue/gray mane out of his eyes and patted his paw in restrained anxiety. Farloft wanted him to meet his best friend, Thomas, but Thomas was human and Blue didn’t trust humans. He had a long history of bad experiences, and humans were always at the root of the problem.

“You go,” he shouted. He looked around trying to think of an excuse for staying. “I have to tidy up the lair. I’ll meet you back here this afternoon.”

Farloft stopped mid-flight and hovered just at the edge of the cliff, his large iridescent green wings flapping slowly just keeping him aloft.

“Ah, Blue…Come on, it will be fun.” He grinned toothily. “You’ll love Thomas. He has the spirit of a dragon.”

Blue hung his head as if studying his paws in detail. Farloft got tired of treading air and landed back on the ledge. He padded over to his friend, sat down in front of him and lifted his chin with a large green paw. Blue was one of his best friends and he wanted his ‘two’ best friends to meet each other. He had thought earlier that he had the young dragon convinced to meet Thomas. Farloft was sure, if the dragon could meet the boy, that Thomas would win him over and prove to him he needn’t fear all humans.

Farloft gazed into his friends large blue eyes. He was a handsome dragon – different from him in so many ways. Blue was… well… he was blue, but he had these bright lemon yellow stripes and a mane of what looked like blue/gray hair which ran from the top of his head to the tip of his fluffy tail. Farloft remembered how surprised he was at Blue’s coloring. He had grown up with green dragons – all green dragons. He didn’t know his species came in any color but green, much less striped and maned.

“Please, Blue, I want to introduce you to Thomas.”

Blue’s eyes began to puddle up. He was so scared – scared of disappointing Farloft, but even more scared of the human.

“He’s just a young boy,” Farloft soothed in his deep baritone. “He doesn’t even carry a weapon.” Farloft frowned at his own statement. He didn’t want to lead Blue astray and make him think he lied to him. “Well… he does carry a knife, but only for cutting meat and cheese… and apples.” Farloft grinned. “He always brings me apples. You like apples,” he added appealing to Blue.

“Not today,” Blue begged. “Maybe tomorrow?” He was hoping for a delay from the older dragon.

“Okay.” Farloft sighed and let his paw drop. “Come on, I’ll race you to the Westridge and back again.”

Farloft grinned and immediately turned to drop off the ledge again. He knew Blue loved to race and the younger dragon always won. He was built slim and could fly much faster than Farloft’s bulky frame. The older green dragon had barely stroked his wings twice when Blue shot past him like a bolt of lightning, giggling in glee. His attitude had totally shifted when he was no longer threatened by the thought of meeting and interacting with a human.

They flew over the valley that separated Farloft’s home, in the side of a semi-dormant volcano, toward the Westridge mountain range. The old dragon was troubled by the lack of snow on the peaks. They usually had snow all year round, but not this year. Only the highest peak in the chain had a cap of white left on it.

This summer had been a scorcher and the valley below was showing the signs of drought. The river that ran its length was no more than a stream. In fact, the waterfall that normally ran down the cliff by Farloft’s cave entrance, and into the pool on the ledge, had dried up to a mere trickle – barely enough to keep the pond filled.

They flew past the castle and over the village of Brownbriar. Farloft spied the people below. He had phenomenal eyesight and quickly picked out Thomas exercising his father’s mount, Baron, a large, black war horse. Farloft made a point of casting his shadow over Thomas, it was often the way the dragon announced his arrival. Thomas looked up, shading his eyes against the sun. He waved and Farloft dipped a wing in a reply greeting.

Blue did not see the exchange. He was busy avoiding eye contact with the humans on the ground. He made it a point to fly at a higher altitude when passing over the village. Usually, he concealed himself in the clouds, but today there were none to be found. There had been none for what seemed like ages.

Farloft saw Thomas spur Baron forward. The horse leapt and charged out of the castle compound, through the village and over the bridge. The horse left a substantial cloud of dust in its wake thrown up from his huge hoofs pounding the parched ground.

The dust cloud was enough to catch Blue’s attention from the air. He faltered in his desire to win the race with Farloft and tried to spy a place to hide from the human who was obviously following them.

The old dragon grinned. He couldn’t help it if Thomas followed them to the Westridge and pulled up below to wait for them to descend. Baron had the stamina to keep up. He was a strong horse and not loaded down with his usual battle saddle, breastplate, helmet, and fetlock protectors. He probably felt light on his hooves too, with only Thomas on his back rather than the boy’s father in full armor. Once the boy was alone, Blue wouldn’t feel so threatened and Farloft was sure he would get a chance to introduce them.

However, nothing went as Farloft imagined. Instead, as Baron’s steel shod hoof struck the ground, it must have hit a bit of flint at the edge of the road. The strike sent up a spark. That tiny spark was all that was needed to set the tinder dry field at the end of the bridge aflame.

Farloft had just glanced away in an endeavor to catch Blue’s eye when the smell of smoke drifted past him on the light breeze. He looked below to see Thomas doing his best to outrun the fire which was already spreading at an alarming rate toward him and the Westridge.

The folks at the edge of the village facing the river saw the fire and immediately ran for buckets, shovels and blankets to drown, beat and smother the fire before it burned what little was salvageable in their fields.

As Farloft and Blue watched, the fire jumped the narrow road and started to lick at Baron’s heals as Thomas urged him forward. The breeze was now a fiery windstorm and it was gaining on the horse and his mount. Baron’s eyes were white rimmed in fear. He charged forward, hooves pounding the road, only to have the ill fortune of an ember falling before him and setting up a flame in his path. He reared and threw Thomas from his back. Thomas somehow managed to retain the reins in his hand. He held onto the horse as it reared and bucked in panic. The animal threatened to trample the boy in its desire to escape the fire which surrounded them.

Farloft tucked his wings and fell like a rock to Thomas’ side. He popped his wings open just over the boy’s head. “Come, Thomas,” he roared over the sound of the blaze. He reached down with one paw, but Thomas moved away.

“I can’t leave Baron,” Thomas shouted, as he continued to struggle with the frightened horse.

Farloft landed. He reached for the horse, but each time he tried to grasp him, the beast almost trampled Thomas in its panic. Farloft chose to stand his ground. If the boy would not leave the horse, then he would keep the flames from the pair. Farloft beat his wings in order to drive the fire back.

Blue could see from his position above that the action Farloft was taking to save his friend was endangering the other human’s at the back of the fire. He was literally driving the flames toward them. The old dragon had no idea what havoc he was causing. The end of the bridge had caught fire. At this rate, the village would be ablaze in no time.

Blue looked to the skies. He was a storm dragon. He had been taught to capture and conjure up storms. Could he make it rain out of a clear blue sky? And, could he make it fast enough and hard enough to quench the fire that threatened Farloft and the humans?

Blue stroked at the hot dry air, treading it as he pulled his paws together. He concentrated on the small white cap located on the distant peak. He mumbled an incantation and mentally pulled at the snow. A vapor began to rise – wispy at first, but growing quickly into a mist. He lifted his paw and beckoned to it. The mist started to form a cloud. The cloud grew as Blue pulled at it with his mind and directed the energy with his paw and a spell. He then turned his attention back toward the pool outside Farloft’s cave. He called to it as well. Another cloud began to form above it. With the waterfall, even though it was just a trickle feeding it, it grew quickly.

Blue looked at the river below and thought to draw from it, but hesitated. It might be the only thing to keep the village safe from the spread of the fire. He couldn’t dry it up.

He worked his paws in circles, one over the other. Like a weaver winding up yarn, he called the two clouds together, one from the west, one from the east. A long deep roll of thunder boomed overhead as the two clouds met directly above the raging fire.

Blue clapped his paws together as he roared a final powerful incantation. The heavens opened and rain poured down on the fire, fields, humans, and dragon.

The fire was extinguished in a matter of minutes. The people cheered with relief. Thomas released Baron, who bolted for the castle, and climbed up on Farloft’s back. Farloft leaped into the air and with a few strong thrusts was up above the rain and by Blue’s side.

“Blue, you are a wonder,” he complimented the younger dragon.

Thomas lay out on Farloft’s neck, his hands holding some of the dragon’s lower neck spikes. “You saved the day, my friend.” His smoke smudged face had a huge grin on it.

Blue had to smile back. The boy had called him friend even before being properly introduced. And the villagers down below were laughing and shouting and dancing in the rain that Blue created. They waved up at the two dragons through the clouds which were now breaking up.

“Come on, Blue,” Farloft coaxed. “Let’s go join in the fun. I love dancing, and dancing in the rain is even better.”

Blue looked down on the humans. They waved and beckoned to him. He looked to Farloft with Thomas on his back. They both grinned at him.

“I bet I could find an apple or two, maybe even some of Cook’s chocolate brownies as a reward for saving the crops and the village,” Thomas offered.

“Oh, Blue,” Farloft sighed, his golden eyes whirling, “you don’t want to miss out on Cook’s brownies. They are the best.” His long pink tongue licked his lips in anticipation.

Blue had to grin at the old dragon. He was such a push over for any kind of treat. The young dragon steeled himself against the idea of humans ‘ala-mass’ and nodded his head. If they liked Farloft, they would at least be decent to him - or so he hoped.

They glided down through what was now a light shower and landed on the outskirts of town. Farloft made an effort to place himself between Blue and the majority of the villagers dancing and enjoying the coolness of the rain. Thomas slid off Farloft’s back as soon as they landed. He winked at his dragon friend and went to stand next to Blue. He and Farloft had talked about how frightened and shy Blue was of humans. The boy didn’t want anything to happen that might make the handsome dragon take flight. He placed a steadying hand on Blue’s shoulder. The dragon trembled slightly beneath his touch.

“It’s okay, Blue,” he soothed. “We’re all friend here.”

Thomas’ older brother, Clifford, and his little sister, Theresa, ran up to the group.

Theresa, who was only about five threw her arms around Farloft’s leg. “Faroff, ’razy Big ‘izard,” the child said affectionately. Farloft leaned down and huffed into her damp hair. She lifted her face and giggled up at him.

Clifford left Theresa with the dragon and walked right up to Blue. “I saw what you did. I was up in the west tower helping rehang the tapestries. That was really something!” He thumped Blue on the shoulder affectionately. “I’ve seen Farloft start a few fires in my time, but never put one out by conjuring a rainstorm. Wait until the King hears about this. He will want to hire you. Even his personal wizard hasn’t been able to bring one about.” Clifford brushed the wet hair out of his face. “The Queen sent me down to fetch you. Come on up to the castle and I’ll get Father to introduce you.”

“Might there be some brownies involved in that meeting?” Farloft asked, stretching his long neck forward toward Clifford.

Clifford scratched his chin. “I don’t know, from my point of view you were spreading the fire more than helping put it out.”

“But I saved your Father’s horse.” Farloft protested. He could see his brownies vanishing.

“Don’t worry, old friend.” Thomas patted Farloft, as he and Blue came up beside them. “I will see that you get your fair share.”

Theresa had relinquished Farloft’s leg and was inspecting the fluffy end of Blue’s tail. She stroked it gently. “Pitty ‘ragon,” she said softly.

The rain had slowed to a light sprinkle. Farloft nudged Thomas, who picked Theresa up and sat her on his back. The little girl giggled and threw herself down the length of the dragon’s neck.

Farloft looked to Blue and raised a brow. “Did she call you a ‘pretty’ dragon?” he teased.

“Did she?” Blue asked. “I only heard her call you a Crazy Big Lizard.” He grinned.

Farloft bumped Blue with his hip. “Now see…didn’t I tell you this was going to be fun?”

We have had so much fun putting together the Dragon/Friends Selfies that I have decided to do another Group Commission - Farloft's Dragon Cuddle.

This will be a Dragon/Gryphon group in a meadow, with a dragon pile, in front of a castle.

GoldenEmotions has agreed to do the art work. She is an exceptional artist.

Please see the Sign-up Sheet for further details. Cut-off date 2/17/17.
